"It should be obvious - MRU particles can leave trails on paper, especially if properly harnessed. So, why not use MRU instead of precious ink in your research table? The tools however, can't be recharged directly in your research table. They can still be recharged in a Charging Chamber, and they will passively recharge while in your inventory if you have any kind of MRU storage on you."
